College - An Important Step in Your Life Plans
by Leonard Hoshule

As high school seniors start to near the end of their high
school careers, many of them start to turn their attention
to which college they will be attending. For many students,
this can be the most important decision they have ever had
to make, and is the starting point of their "adult" lives.
But what can you expect from the first day of your new
college life?

Your first day of college begins with hope and dreams
of a great future. As you walk around your chosen college
campus for the first time, you will be exploring your "home
away from home" for the next four or more years. Your first
day is filled with anticipation as you imagine what your
college life will be like, after having watched all kinds of
television programs that depict college life as a series of
parties and fun, with intense knowledge crammed in between.
You also wonder what kinds of friends you will make and what
other activities you'll be involved in over the years.

But first, you'll be roused out of your reveries with the
sound of the bell which signals the start of your college
orientation. Wading through a swarm of fresh-faced new
students just like you, you'll probably look around hoping
for some recognition, or at least an inkling of which of
these people will become your friends and share your college
experience with you. But, the orientation begins and you
are soon lulled to sleep as they cover where the dorms are
located and how to find the cafeteria - information that you
already know having read the college handbook cover to cover
multiple times before coming to school. After your first
session is over, you begin to wonder if college is all it
is cracked up to be.

Luckily, these intro sessions are followed by a very welcome
ice breaker gathering, where you can meet and greet other
students. Very soon, the ice will be broken and you'll be
enjoying conversations with students from different parts of
the country and from very different backgrounds. Now this
is what college is supposed to be! You'll quickly find some
interesting potential friends, and soon you'll be living the
college life you dreamed of when you were in high school -
the parties, the friends, the learing, and more.

As your college graduation draws near, you'll be filled with
both relief and sadness. Relief because you are tired of
school and ready for the next stage of your life. Sadness
because you realize that college is where some of the best
memories of your life are formed, and that you have grown
into the adult you are today. Even though your college
experience wasn't exactly like on TV, you realize you have
something even better - real friends and real knowledge to
meet the challenges that lay ahead. But always remember
what that first day of college felt like!
