Computer Lessons and Information for Senior
by Scott Adkinson

Most people who have never used a computer tend
to feel intimidated by them, seniors especially so.
Many seniors claim they have no desire to ever
learn how to use a computer. However, once
they~ve learned a few basic skills they~ll wonder
how they ever did without it. There are many
reasons why seniors should learn how to use
computers especially in this information day and
age.

Computers are a great way to help seniors stay in
touch with family and friends, especially those who
live in a different country. E-mail is fairly simple to
use and after a few tries seniors can be emailing like
old pros. E-mail is especially great for seniors who
have family across the world and don~t get the
opportunity to talk to them often. With more and
more seniors getting on the Internet E-mail is
becoming preferred over the telephone or post.

Learning new things is important no matter what
your age is. Seniors will feel rejuvenated just by
learning a few simple computer skills. Teaching
seniors how to use the Internet is also great because
it opens them to a whole new way to get
information. The Internet is a wealth of new ideas
and information that can benefit a whole range of
people. Seniors will love to surf the Internet for
new recipes and vacation ideas.

Most seniors and most people in fact don~t need the
top of the line computers that have just come out on
the market. Computers that are even two years old
are fast enough to handle most simple computing
requirements such as surfing the Internet and word
processing. A good sized computer screen is
important, as is a color printer. Some other
computer accessories that can be useful are a digital
camera and a scanner.

If seniors are having problems learning basic
computer skills getting them enrolled in a course at
the local community or retirement center is a great
idea. These classes move at a fairly slow pace and
are taught by professionals who are patient and can
explain concepts clearly. If you are helping a senior
learn how to use a computer be patient since it may
take them some time.

Whether they live at home or in a retirement
community learning how to use a computer is a
great way for seniors to feel independent. It allows
them to send emails to family and friends, find old
acquaintances they lost touch with, check what~s
happening in the world, and learn some new
hobbies.
